The Roan Highlands are a scenic stretch of the Appalachian Mountains along the North Carolina–Tennessee border, known for their rolling grassy balds, cool high-elevation climate, and sweeping panoramic views. Rising above 6,000 feet, the area features rare spruce-fir forests and one of the world’s largest natural displays of Catawba rhododendron, which bloom each June. A celebrated section of the Appalachian Trail crosses the highlands, making it a favorite destination for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers seeking some of the Southeast’s most breathtaking mountain scenery.
